Private Tour to Szentendre |
The picturesque little Danubian town of Szentendre is one of the most popular tourist destinations for visitors to Budapest, crammed as it is with museums, galleries and artists’ shops.
We leave Budapest towards the North and reach Szentendre in about half an hour by suburban train. Hungary might not have a sea but this is more than made up for by the mighty Danube. Szentendre can be found on the right bank of the river.
The city was founded by Serbian, Dalmatian, Croatian and Greek refugees escaping from the Turkish invasion who settled down here in the 18th century. There were some hundreds of families including Orthodox merchants of all different kinds. They named their town after the medieval patron saint of the settlement, Saint Andrew. They built the town in a baroque style, just like in Mediterranean countries. The town is situated on the slope of a hill with all streets are running down to the water.
On the tour we will walk in the narrow streets and along the Danube on the promenade where you can enjoy the romantic feeling created by the 18th century baroque houses. We will also visit the historical city, taking in the Holy Trinity monument and the oldest Serbian Orthodox church in Hungary. Following the narrowest street in Hungary we will eventually reach the top of a small hill where we will have a perfect view of the town.
Szentendre is a gorgeous little town, definitely worth a visit if you are coming to Budapest.
