Although not sporting quite the same number and variety of establishments as its near neighbour Prague, Budapest has plenty to offer the gay visitor: lots of bars and clubs, an attractive local population and some of the best Turkish baths in mainland Europe.
The city itself is a thriving metropolis of 1.7 million people comprising of two, once separate, towns, hilly royal Buda and bustling modern Pest, the two sides divided by the stately Danube river. There have been inhabitants here for more than two millenia including the Romans, the Magyars (forerunners of the Hungarian nation today) and, for 160 years, the Ottoman Turks who left behind some of the aforementioned Baths. The various actors in the city’s historical drama have conspired to produce some stunning architecture and beautiful historic sights.
